The Mill Project

Centre for the Improvisation in the Art

Improvisation is an activity that forms an integral part of our lives and plays an irreplaceable part in the arts as well. In the arts - in the teaching as well as in practice - improvisation is mostly considered to be a marginal and dilettante thing. It is certain that improvisation develops an individual's ability to fantasize as well developing personality. It is the activity which draws from personal experiences, moods and emotions, but mostly from the bravery and talents of the personality.
During regular arts educational processes that are inherited from one generation to another without any important corrections, the ability to improvise is almost perfectly suppressed, or killed, due to precisely defined methods and the necessity for become just a competent crafts person, or an outsider. From there on, the personal development of an individual is not pursued, or it is left for the individuals to develop themselves. But in the many cases, these individuals do not even know that they have a talent for improvisation, or what improvisation means.
The aim of the centre is to support the originality of individuals, search and make use of the individual abilities of their personalities and to set up unique project workshops involving both common and individual activities.
The Mill building is to have a studio capable of recording musical and visual arts, including a hospitality room, study room, computers, etc. - where workshops will be created focused on individual art branches:

Every workshop is conducted by a famous person of European importance, who will be responsible for the workshop. This counts on mutual interaction and influence between and among the individual branches.

Mr. Jiří Stivín, and his company Stiv'n Quodlibet System s.r.o. is responsible for securing the operation, and is responsible for the ideas and contens of the activities.

To start the whole project, the renovation of the Mill in Väenory u Prahy, No. 217, is necesary. The Mill is the property of SQS s.r.o. The majority of the activities of the Centre for improvisation in the arts will take place there.

Travel to and from Prague is very simple (a train from Sm'chov , which takes 20 min.). There are also to be courses for the small children, including active educational concerts and year - round activities. The Mill's renovation study by Ing. Arch. Jaroslav Peterka details a lack of space for individual wokshop. In some workshops, certain branches will have limited capabilities which may be an advantage for improvisation. Every day there will be one branch and once a month all branches will work together.

Institutions and individuals - including companies - that are willing to financially participate in the renovation and the creation of the FIA Centre "The Mill" will be listed on all advertising material for the Centre, CD recordings from concerts, video and movie projects, performances and books that will be given the chance of the further cooperation. If there is any interest, Mr. Jiří Stivín can create projects or concerts focused on the interests of the sponsors, including audiovisual experimental activities.
